Liverpool – The Beatles – Where it all began (please find the English version at the end of the text)
Impossível falar de Liverpool sem pensar nos Beatles, assim como falar dos Beatles sem pensar em Liverpool: tudo está intimamente ligado, não é mesmo?
Sim, claro, pois foi aqui que nasceram os 4 astros e se formou o maior fenômeno musical de todos os tempos, influenciando o comportamento e a cultura mundial a partir dos anos 60.
Entre 1963 e 1970, a cada novo lançamento, eram anunciados no rádio como “os rapazes de Liverpool”.
Mas como o destino os atraiu?
Como será que estes astros se alinharam e se tornaram The Beatles ou Fab Four (4 fabulosos), como também ficaram conhecidos?
Vamos, então, voltar aos anos 40 e conhecer esta incrível história, passando por lugares e pessoas que marcaram o fenômeno Beatlemania pela ordem de “alinhamento”:
John Lennon – O primeiro Beatle
Filho de Fred Lennon e Julia Stanley, John nasceu em 09 de Outubro de 1940 e sua primeira casa foi no endereço Newcaste Road, 9.
Em 1942 seus pais se separaram e até os 5 anos de idade John permaneceu a maior parte do tempo com sua mãe.
Em 1945 Lennon começou a estudar na escola primária Dovedale.
No mesmo ano ele foi morar com a irmã de sua mãe, Mary ou Mimi, e seu marido, George, que não tinham filhos e proporcionaram o lar estável e carinhoso que tanto precisava.
O novo endereço era 251, Menlove Ave, mais conhecido como “Mendips”, que fica na comunidade de Woolton – Liverpool.
Em setembro de 1952, John deixou a escola primária Dovedale e foi estudar no Quarry Bank High School, na comunidade de Woolton.
Em 1955, após a perda repentina de tio George, John se aproximou de Julia, sua mãe, que o havia ensinado a tocar banjo e que aceitava seu comportamento rebelde melhor do que Mimi.
Em 1956 John ouviu no rádio, a canção “Heartbreak Hotel” de Elvis Presley pela primeira vez e, a partir dali, tudo mudaria em sua vida.
Lennon comprou seu primeiro violão e logo depois fez sua mãe comprar outro, ainda melhor.
Formou seu primeiro grupo musical, The Quarry Men, que tocava o estilo skiffle, versão inglesa do influente rock ‘n’ roll americano.
Em 06 de julho de 1957, os Quarry Men se apresentaram em dois horários numa festa na Igreja de Saint Peter.
No intervalo das apresentações, um vizinho de John, Ivan Vaughan, o apresentou ao seu colega de classe no Liverpool Institute, um garoto de 15 anos chamado Paul McCartney.
Paul pegou o violão emprestado, tocou e cantou com precisão algumas canções prediletas do novo amigo.
Lennon não se impressionava facilmente e certamente não queria perder a liderança do grupo, porém viu em Paul alguém que, além de afinar o violão, sabia tocar muito bem o instrumento, dominando as letras das músicas.
Paul foi convidado a fazer parte do grupo e a semente dos Beatles foi plantada precisamente neste local, a partir do encontro promovido por Ivan Vaughan. A placa debaixo da janela central deixa marcado o histórico momento.
Portanto, a partir dali, dois astros já permaneceriam alinhados: John Lennon e Paul McCartney.
Nas palavras de John Lennon: “foi naquele dia; o dia em que conheci Paul e tudo começou a se mover”
Paul passou a frequentar Mendips, onde ensaiavam no quarto de John.
Ali nasceram canções de sucesso, como “Please, Please Me”, “I Call Your Name” e “I’ll Get To You”, porém às vezes Mimi se incomodava com o “barulho” e os mandava para a varanda, na frente da casa.
Este fato fez com que a dupla também passasse a se reunir em casa de Paul, onde seu pai trabalhava fora durante o dia.
No outono de 1957, John deixou o Quarry Bank High School (última foto),
passando para o Liverpool College of Art, onde conheceu Cynthia Powell, sua primeira esposa.
Em 15 de Julho de 1958, Julia visitou John e a irmã Mimi, em Mendips e na saída, ao cruzar a rua para pegar o ônibus, foi atropelada por um policial de folga e morta aos 44 anos.
Este fato marcou profundamente John e o aproximou ainda mais de Paul, que, igualmente, havia perdido sua mãe no ano anterior.
Nos 3 anos seguintes o grupo musical de John e Paul passou por mudanças de nome e de formação, enquanto, gradualmente, refinava seu próprio estilo de rock ’n’ roll, em clubes de Liverpool e Hamburgo, na Alemanha.
A partir do sucesso dos Beatles, John passava a maior parte do tempo fora de Mendips, pois sua banda deixava de ser de Liverpool, para se tornar um fenômeno ainda nacional.
Mesmo após o sucesso mundial, a partir de 1962 e 1963, Mimi tentou permanecer de forma normal em Mendips, porém o assédio em sua casa passaria a ser constante.
Sentia-se orgulhosa do sucesso, porém, para ela, John Lennon ainda era um adolescente em busca de autoafirmação.
Embora John demonstrasse grande interesse em manter a casa onde morou, Mimi vendeu Mendips em 1965 e se mudou para a localidade de Dorset, em um imóvel comprado pelo então famoso sobrinho.
John jamais se esqueceu dos anos que ali viveu; Liverpool e Mendips sempre significaram muito para ele, que constantemente falava sobre sua cidade natal.
Tudo começou em Mendips, na casa onde passou sua infância e juventude, em Woolton – Liverpool.

Mais tarde, na companhia de Yoko, sempre que voltava a Liverpool John passava de carro pela Menlove Avenue, apontava para a casa e dizia: “é aquela”.
Nesta época tia Mimi havia se mudado dali e já não podiam entrar para vê-la por dentro.
John, então, costumava descrever cada divisão de Mendips: a cozinha, o quintal e o quarto do andar de cima, onde escrevia seu diário em código para que Mimi não conseguisse ler.
Tudo o que aconteceu mais tarde, germinou a partir do sonho de John em seu pequeno quarto, em Mendips, um lugar muito especial.
Ali, naquela improvável casa, na tranquila Liverpool, cresceu o mais criativo e influente rebelde do século XX.

Impossible to talk about Liverpool without thinking of The Beatles, as well as talking about The Beatles without thinking of Liverpool: all are closely connected, aren’t they?
Yes, of course, because that is where the 4 stars were born and formed the biggest musical phenomenon of all time, influencing the world behavior and culture from the “Sixties”.
On every new release between 1963 and 1970, the radio announced them as “the boys from Liverpool“.
But how has fate attracted them?
How did these 4 stars line up to become The Beatles or Fab Four as they were known, too?
So, let’s get back to the forties exploring this incredible history, passing by places and people that marked the Beatlemania phenomenon, following the order of “alignment”:
John Lennon – The first Beatle
Son of Fred Lennon and Julia Stanley, John was born on October 09th, 1940 and his first address was 9, Newcastle Road.
In 1942 his parents split up so John stayed most of the time with his mother until the age of 5.
In 1945, John started going to Dovedale primary school.
In the same year he went to live with his mother’s sister, Mary or Mimi, and her husband, George, who had no children, providing the stable and loving home he needed so much.
The new address was 251, Menlove Ave, also known as “Mendips”, located in the suburb of Woolton-Liverpool.
In September of 1952, John left the Dovedale primary school to study at the Quarry Bank High School, Woolton.
In 1955, with a sudden uncle George’s pass away, John reapproached to Julia, his mother, who had taught him how to play the banjo and accepted his rebellious behavior better than Mimi did.
In 1956 John heard for the first time the song “Heartbreak Hotel” on the radio, by Elvis Presley and from that moment everything would change in his life.
Lennon bought his first guitar, but soon after he made his mother buy a second one, even better.
He formed the first musical group The Quarry Men, who played skiffle music, the English version of the influential American rock ‘n’ roll.
On 06 July 1957, The Quarry Men would perform twice at a party at the St Peter’s Church – Woolton.
Between these presentations, a neighbor of John’s, Ivan Vaughan, introduced his classmate from the Liverpool Institute, a 15-year-old boy named Paul McCartney.
Paul picked up the guitar, played and sang accurately some of John’s favorite songs.
Lennon was not easily impressed and certainly didn’t want to lose the group leadership, however, he saw in Paul someone who could finely tune a guitar, knew how to play the instrument very well, and dominated the song’s lyrics.
Then, Paul was invited to be part of the Quarry Men and the seed of the Beatles was planted right in that place, from the meeting promoted by Ivan Vaughan.
The plate beneath the central window leaves marked the historic gathering.
Therefore, from that point on, two stars already would remain aligned: John Lennon and Paul McCartney.
In John Lennon’s words: ” that was day, the day that I met Paul, that it started moving “
Paul went on visiting Mendips, where they rehearsed in John’s room and hit songs were composed, such as “Please, Please Me”, “I Call Your Name” and “I’ll Get To You”, however sometimes Mimi disapproved the “noise” and asked the boys to move to the porch on the front side of the house.
This led the duo to also rehearse at Paul’s home, once his father worked out during the day.
In the fall of 1957, John left the Quarry Bank High School going to the Liverpool College of Art, where he met Cynthia Powell, his first wife.
On 15 July 1958, Julia came to see John and her sister Mimi at Mendips and as she left the house while crossing the street to catch the bus, she was knocked down by an off-duty policeman, dying at the age of 44.
This fact marked John deeply and made him approach even more of Paul, who had also lost his mother the year before.
In the next 3 years, the John and Paul’s musical group went through name changes and members, while gradually refined their own rock ‘n’ roll style in both clubs of Liverpool and Hamburg, Germany.
From the Beatles’ success, John spent most of his time out of Mendips, since now they wouldn’t be a local band from Liverpool anymore, but a national phenomenon.
Even after their worldwide fame, from 1962 and 1963, Mimi tried to remain at Mendips, but fans’ harassment in front of her house would become constant.
She felt proud of the success, however, for her, John Lennon still was a teenager in search of self-affirmation.
Although John showed great interest in maintaining the house where he grew up, Mimi sold Mendips in 1965 and moved to the Dorset, on a property purchased by her then famous nephew.
John never forgot the years he lived there; Liverpool and Mendips always meant a lot to him who constantly talked about his hometown.
It all started at Mendips, in the house where he lived his childhood and youth, in Woolton-Liverpool.
Later on, in the company of Yoko, John always came back to Liverpool and as he passed before Menlove Avenue, he pointed to the house and said “that’s it”.
Unfortunately, at that time Aunt Mimi had moved out so they couldn’t get in to see it anymore.
John then used to describe each Mendips’ room: the kitchen, the backyard, and the upstairs bedroom where he wrote his diary in code so that Mimi couldn’t read it.
All that happened later was possible from a dream of John’s in his small room at Mendips, a very special place, indeed.
That unlikely home in Liverpool was the place of the most creative and influential rebel of the 20th century.
