Certa vez, amigos de longa data me ligaram, dizendo: estamos de mudança para Sarasota.
Confesso que jamais tinha ouvido falar naquela cidade, nem mesmo sabia escrever seu estranho nome para matar a curiosidade pela Internet.
Depois de algumas tentativas, lá estava Sarasota na tela do meu computador.
Que alívio …!!!
Descobri que ficava no Golfo do México, 97 quilômetros (60 milhas) ao sul de Tampa, na qual havia estado anos antes.
Passado um tempo, as notícias que me chegavam não poderiam ser mais animadoras: linda região, clima perfeito, praia dos sonhos, incrível pôr do sol, etc.
Então, esperei até que se adaptassem à nova morada, arrumei as malas e fui revê-los, além de conferir as maravilhas que contavam.
Na manhã seguinte à minha chegada, aconteceu o esperado encontro com a natureza local:
- Praia de Siesta
Por vários anos eleita a melhor praia dos Estados Unidos, incluindo 2017, Siesta Beach possui a areia mais fina e mais branca do mundo.
Mar de agradável temperatura e transparência, juntamente com suaves ondas, fazem a diferença e justificam a classificação e fama de Siesta Beach.
Além da beleza natural, a praia extremamente limpa proporciona segurança aos banhistas e visitantes que a procuram.
O que mais se pode esperar de um destino para relaxar como este, não é mesmo?
No coração da cidade encontram-se outros passeios, além de incríveis locais para fotografar:
- Sarasota Bayfront
Sobre o pontal, que avança em direção às águas da baia de Sarasota, fica o Island Park, totalmente contornado pela Marina Jack Trail.
A beleza da vista para o mar
e do ancoradouro ao lado é impressionante.
Logo na entrada do parque fica o portal que dá acesso ao maravilhoso espaço verde com passeios, trilhas e primoroso paisagismo.
Criada pela artista Glenna Goodacre, na parte central fica a escultura de bronze que apresenta cinco crianças se exercitando enquanto brincam.
O título da obra é “Olympic Wannabes”, algo como “queremos ser olímpicos”.
Na ponta extrema do parque, uma interessante fonte (Dolphin Fountain) exibe 4 golfinhos, em tamanho real, “saltando” fora d’água.
- Marina Plaza e Bayfront Drive
A partir do Island Park, contornando a Marina Jack Trail, encontra-se a Marina Plaza
com centenas de barcos ancorados ao píer.
Cenário de encher os olhos…..
Ali mesmo na Marina Plaza, é possível contratar um passeio de barco ou, quem sabe, uma inesquecível pescaria.
- Bayfront Drive
Deixando a Marina Plaza, e caminhando paralelamente à Bayfront Drive, despontam os modernos edifícios que margeiam o boulevard composto de jardins, praças e lagos.
Depois de tirar inúmeras fotos, o melhor ainda estava por vir…..
Pouco antes da Bayfront Drive encontrar a Gulf Stream, tive enorme surpresa ao encontrar, ali em Sarasota, uma escultura que retrata, perfeitamente, a euforia provocada pelo final da Segunda Guerra Mundial.
A (gigantesca) obra do renomado artista norte-americano Seward Johnson foi inspirada na capa da revista Life do ano de 1945.
O nome oficial da escultura é “Rendição Incondicional”.
Como amante de fotografia, prontamente identifiquei aquela cena, tida como uma das fotos mais aclamadas de todos os tempos.
Ao voltar de Sarasota, fui pesquisar um pouco mais sobre a tudo aquilo, conforme abaixo:
Em 14 de agosto de 1945 o presidente Truman anunciou, oficialmente, o final da Segunda Guerra Mundial, fato este celebrado com euforia pelas ruas de Nova York.
O dia foi tão importante, que passou a ser chamado de “V-J day” (Dia da vitória sobre o Japão).
O fotógrafo Alfred Eisenstaedt fazia um trabalho próximo à Times Square, quando, no meio da multidão, presenciou e fotografou um marinheiro beijando apaixonadamente uma suposta enfermeira.
Publicada na capa da prestigiada revista Life uma semana mais tarde, tornou-se uma das imagens mais famosas de todos os tempos; um verdadeiro clássico da fotografia mundial.
Após o enorme sucesso da edição da revista, por anos buscou-se saber quem eram aquelas pessoas imortalizadas pela câmera de Alfred.
Em 1970, Greta Friedman escreveu ao fotógrafo, afirmando ser a célebre mulher do retrato, quando revelou outros dois grandes segredos guardados por 25 anos:
- Nunca foi enfermeira como acreditavam que fosse, mas, sim, uma auxiliar de dentista e por isso vestia roupa branca na ocasião.
- Contou que vinha passando pela Rua 45, próximo do encontro da Broadway com a Sétima Avenida, quando foi pega de surpresa e recebeu aquele famoso beijo de um marinheiro jamais visto por ela.
Descoberta a “enfermeira”, a busca concentrou-se na localização do “marinheiro”.
Durante um longo período, dez homens haviam se apresentado como o misterioso senhor da foto, tendo o caso chegado à corte judicial americana.
Finalmente, em 1987, George Mendonsa identificou-se como o “elo perdido” da história, ao abrir um processo contra o grupo Time & Life, alegando que haviam violado seu direito de imagem ao usar a icônica fotografia, sem permissão.
Segundo relatou George, ele havia bebido pouco antes do instante da foto e, na euforia da notícia, viu uma enfermeira passando.
Imaginando que ela fizesse parte das tropas americanas, em comemoração, desferiu um invejável beijo na mesma.
Além da reveladora história, George contou mais dois segredos, ao afirmar que:
- Naquele momento estava, pela primeira vez, acompanhado de sua namorada, Rita, com a qual viria a se casar posteriormente.
- Rita não só presenciou o beijo de George com uma estranha, como também apareceu sorrindo ao fundo, na série de fotos de Alfred…..
Em 2012, George e Greta se reencontraram publicamente, 67 anos após o final da guerra e do beijo digno de Hollywood….
Voltando à escultura…
Como vimos, a cena de 1945, imortalizada em fotografia, inspirou a obra “Rendição Incondicional”, que se encontra instalada em Sarasota, com seus 7,60m de altura (25 pés).
Mal poderia imaginar Greta Friedman que, naquele dia, ao passar pela Rua 45 de Nova York, seria motivo de tanto interesse e se tornaria uma personagem da história americana.
É curioso considerar que, além do fotógrafo e escultor envolvidos na obra, Greta Friedman e George Mendonsa ainda continuam sendo inspiração de casais apaixonados, que a cada instante passam por eles em Sarasota, onde a “enfermeira” e o “marinheiro” jamais estiveram…..

Some years ago long-time friends called me saying they were moving to Sarasota.
To be honest, I had never heard of this town not even knew how to write its strange name to satisfy my curiosity through the Internet.
After a few tries Sarasota finally was there on my PC screen.
What a relief …!!!
I found out it lies in the Gulf of Mexico, 97 kilometers (60 miles) South of Tampa, where I had been a couple of years before.
By talking to them some months later, I learned the place couldn’t be better: beautiful region, perfect climate, dream beaches, amazing sunsets, etc.
As it stands, I waited until they adapted themselves to new address, then I packed my bags and traveled to see them in addition to meet all the wonders I had been told.
So, the morning after arriving I had my first date with Sarasota nature:
- Siesta Beach – The US #1
Being elected the best beach of the United States for several years, including 2017, Siesta Beach boasts the finest and whitest sand in the world.
The nice temperature, transparency of the sea plus soft waves make the difference and justify both the rank and fame of Siesta Beach.
Besides the natural beauty, the beach is extremely clean, providing safety for bathers and people who come to it.
What else could someone expect from a destination like this to relax?
At the city very heart there are additional attractions plus amazing places to photograph:
- Sarasota Bayfront
On a cape advancing toward the waters of Sarasota Bay lies Island Park, fully surrounded by the Marina Jack Trail.
The beauty of the sea and nearby pier are really impressive.
Just off the Park’s entrance there’s a gate leading to the wonderful green space with sidewalks, trails and gorgeous vegetation.
In the central region there’s the sculpture “Olympic Wannabes” created by Glenna Goodacre, featuring five happy children exercising while playing.
On the cape tip the interesting Dolphin Fountain displays 4 life-size dolphins jumping out of the water.
- Marina Plaza and Bayfront Drive
From Island Park, skirting Marina Jack Trail you will find Marina Plaza with hundreds of boats moored along the pier.
A view to fill your eyes …
At Marina Plaza itself you can hire a boat ride or maybe an unforgettable fishing day.
- Bayfront Drive
By walking from Marina Plaza towards the Bayfront Drive you’ll find modern buildings emerging along the boulevard of gardens, squares and lakes.
After taking a lot of photos, the best was yet to come …
Just before the Bayfront Drive joins the Gulf Stream I had a big surprise, finding in Sarasota a sculpture that perfectly depicts the euphoria caused by the end of the Second World War.
The (gigantic) work by the renowned American artist Seward Johnson has been inspired by a Life magazine cover dated of 1945.
The sculpture’s official name is “Unconditional Surrender“.
Lover of photography as I am, I soon identified the scene regarded as one of the most prestigious pictures of all time.
Back to my home, I found out a bit more on both the photo and sculpture, as follows:
In August 14th, 1945, President Truman officially announced the end of the Second World War, which was celebrated in the streets of New York with big euphoria.
The day was so important that came to be called “V-J day” (Victory over Japan day)
The photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt worked close to Times Square when by chance, in the middle of the crowd, he witnessed and photographed a sailor passionately kissing a nurse.
A week later the picture has been published on the prestigious Life magazine cover.
As of it this photo has become one of the most famous images of all time; a true classic of world photography.
After the magazine’s huge success for years people sought to find out who was that immortalized couple captured by Alfred’s camera.
In 1970, Greta Friedman wrote to the photographer claiming to be the “woman in the portrait“, when she came to reveal two other secrets kept for 25 years:
- She was not a nurse as everyone believed she was, but a dentist assistant, that’s why she wore white clothes on the day.
- Greta told she came through 45th Street, close to the joint of the Broadway with 7th Avenue, when she was caught off guard, receiving the famous kiss of a sailor she had never seen before.
Once the “nurse” had been discovered, the search went on to the unknown “sailor”.
During a long period ten men claimed to be the mysterious man, to the point of the case reach the American Court.
Finally, in 1987, George Mendonsa was identified as the history’s “missing link“, as he opened a case against Time & Life claiming they had violated his right of image by using the famous photograph without permission.
According to George, he had drunk just before the moment of the photograph and in the euphoria of the news saw that “nurse” passing by.
He presumed she was part of the U.S. military troop, then struck her an enviable kiss like that.
In addition to the revealing history, George has disclosed two other secrets, by stating:
- At that moment he was for the first time accompanied by his girlfriend Rita with whom he came to marry later.
- Rita not only witnessed the George’s kiss with a strange woman, but she also appeared smiling in the background of the serial pictures taken by Alfred …
In 2012 George and Greta met themselves publicly once again, 67 years after the end of the war and of that kiss worthy of Hollywood.
Back to sculpture…..
In line with all this, the picture immortalized on the photo of 1945 inspired the work “Unconditional Surrender” which stands in Sarasota with its 7, 60 m high (25 feet).
Greta Friedman would never be able to imagine that on that day, passing by the 45th Street, New York, she would cause so much interest and would become a mysterious character in American history.
It’s curious to consider that, in addition to photographer and sculptor involved in work, Greta Friedman and George Mendonsa go on inspiring couples in love whenever people pass by them in Sarasota, where “nurse” and “sailor” had never been….
