Cambridge – Uma joia no interior da Inglaterra

Cambridge – A jewel within England (Please read the English version at the end of the text)

Se você pretende ir ao Reino Unido, não deixe de incluir a fascinante Cambridge em seu roteiro.

 

A 80 km de Londres, a cidade, às margens do rio Cam (daí seu nome Cambridge), conta com uma população de 110.000 pessoas e tem uma das mais prestigiadas universidades do mundo, na qual estudam 22.000 alunos de 65 diferentes países.

Portanto, sua fama de ser uma cidade universitária, é mais do que merecida.

Um breve histórico sobre as duas principais escolas superiores da Inglaterra:

A Universidade de Oxford não tem uma data precisa de fundação, porém, em 1096, já dispunha de algum tipo de ensino avançado.

Em 1167, Henry II proibiu os alunos ingleses de estudar na Universidade de Paris (já existia???), o que resultou no aprimoramento de cursos em Oxford.

No ano de 1209, alguns acadêmicos de Oxford se desentenderam com a população local e fundaram a Universidade de Cambridge, atualmente com 38 escolas.

Incrível……

Não, eu não errei a data; foi realmente em 1209 !!

Desde então, século XIII, a instituição formou 92 ganhadores de Premio Nobel. Impressionante!!!!

Provavelmente você já tenha ouvido falar de alguns ex-alunos de Cambridge. Vou tentar ajudar, caso não se lembre:

 

• Sir Isaac Newton, físico que provou a lei da gravidade, princípio de ação e reação e por aí vai..

 

• Charles Darwin, naturalista e pai da polêmica origem das espécies ou Teoria da Evolução

 

• Alan Turing, formulador da teoria da computação durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial .      Veja o recente filme “O Jogo da Imitação” ou pelo menos o Trailer youtube.com/watch?v=nuPZUUED5uk

 

• Ian Wilmut, desenvolveu a clonagem de animais, tal como a conhecida ovelha Dolly

 

• Príncipe Charles, herdeiro da Rainha Elizabeth II, da Inglaterra

 

Outro consagrado cientista relacionado à instituição, é o britânico Stephen Hawking que se formou em Oxford, porém doutorou-se em Cambridge (1966) e lecionou por lá.

Em 1974 ele provou uma inovadora teoria a respeito de radiações térmicas emitidas por buracos negros…..

Deve ter sido bastante importante, mas paro por aqui para não complicar as coisas….para nós…

O personagem principal foi interpretado pelo ator britânico Eddie Redmayne, a quem coube o Oscar 2015 pela impecável atuação no papel de Hawking.

Cenas marcantes do filme envolvem o Rio Cam, quando Hawking dança sobre a ponte com Jane Wilde (interpretada por Felicity Jones) ou quando aparecem juntos na margem, com a Ponte dos Suspiros ao fundo.

Portanto, se ainda não assistiu ao filme, não deixe de vê-lo quando puder, para se encantar pela história do genial cientista e também pela universidade que o consagrou.

Voltando a Cambridge, por ser plana e com trânsito bem tranquilo, a maioria das pessoas usa bicicleta como meio de locomoção.

Como turista, prepare-se para caminhar, pois as principais atrações são vistas a pé, sem grandes esforços, em 2 a 3 dias.

Atividades musicais, culturais e outras apresentações são divulgadas em cartazes afixados em várias partes da cidade. Assim sendo, se quiser aproveitar alguma delas, fique atento à programação.

Cambridge oferece hospedagem em hotéis de médio e pequeno porte, porém, se desejar conhecer um pouco da cultura local, avalie uma opção de Bed&Breakfast (B&B).

As opções de restaurantes são diversas e certamente você irá identificar algum do seu gosto e conveniência, durante seu passeio.

Em Cambridge há uma tradicional atração, que é o passeio de barco pelo rio Cam, comandado por um “chauffeur” (como eles dizem).

O “chauffeured punt tour” dura em torno de 45 minutos, passando pelos “College Backs”, ou seja, pelas diversas escolas que integram a famosa universidade. Você terá oportunidade de ver e fotografar a belíssima paisagem durante o circuito.

Há uma opção de você mesmo alugar o barco e sair navegando, mas o movimento é intenso e exige certa prática, portanto, prefira um “chauffeur” no comando (em geral estudantes), aproveitando para relaxar e curtir o incrível visual.

Se você for do tipo fanático por foto ou filme, procure sentar-se o mais à frente possível e ao lado direito do “chauffeur”, para ter a mínima interferência na paisagem.

Cambridge – A jewel within England

If you plan to go to the United Kingdom be sure to include the fascinating Cambridge in your itinerary.

Just 80 km from London, the city upon the river Cam (hence its name Cambridge), has a population of 110,000 people with one of the most prestigious universities in the world, in which 22000 students from 65 different countries go to study.

Therefore, its reputation for being an university town is more than deserved.

A brief history about the two main universities in England:

The University of Oxford does not have a precise date of foundation, however it is known that somehow in 1096 they already provided advanced education.

In 1167, Henry II forbade English students to study at the University of Paris ( already existent??), causing  the University of Oxford to grow very quickly.

In the year 1209, after disputes between students University of Oxford and the local population, some of them fled to Cambridge where they established what became the University of Cambridge, now with 38 Colleges.

Amazing …

No, I didn’t miss the year; it was really in 1209!!!!

Since then, the institution graduated 92 Nobel Prize winners. Awesome!!!

Probably you’ve heard about some alumni of Cambridge. I’ll try to help you in case you don’t remember:

Another brilliant scientist related to institution is the British Stephen Hawking, graduated from Oxford, but then took his Ph.d. at Cambridge (1966), as well as he became a teacher there.

In 1974 Hawking proved an innovative theory on thermal radiation made by the black holes and stuff….

It must have been really important, but, if I may, I stop by here not to complicate things … for us all…

The book and film of 2015 “The Theory of Everything”, tells his remarkable life story, with several scenes filmed in Cambridge. Worth watching the film, indeed.

The main role was played by British actor Eddie Redmayne, who won the Oscar 2015 due to his impeccable acting as Mr. Hawking.

Striking sets are related to the River Cam, for instance when Hawking dances on a bridge with Jane Wilde (acted by Felicity Jones), or when they appear together on the bank with the Bridge of Sighs behind them.

So, if you haven’t seen the movie yet, be sure to do it when you have a chance, so you’ll know the history of the genius scientist as well as the university that consecrated him.

Returning to Cambridge, since the city is fairly flat and the local traffic is easy, most people use bicycles as a means of locomotion.

As a tourist, get ready to walk, because the attractions can be explored on foot during 2 to 3 days.

Musical, cultural activities and stuff are published on posters fixed around the city. Therefore, if you want to take advantage of any of them, be sure to stay tuned to programming.

Cambridge offers lodgings in hotels of medium and small business, but I suggest you to consider an option of Bed&Breakfast (B&B), if you want to learn a bit more about the local culture.

As dining options are diverse, you certainly will identify some of your taste and convenience during your trip.

In Cambridge there is a traditional attraction: the boat trip on the River Cam, commanded by a “chauffeur” (as they say).

The “punt chauffeur-driven tour” lasts around 45 minutes, sailing the Backs of the Colleges, this is by several schools belonging to the famous University. You will be able to view and photograph the beautiful landscape during the circuit.

One of the companies offers the ride since 1910, when it was founded.

There is an option of renting a boat and go out sailing by yourself, but the movement is intense and requires previous experience.  Therefore prefer a “chauffeur” at the command (students in general), to relax and enjoy the amazing view.

If you like taking photos or film, try to sit as far ahead as possible and to the right seat so you’ll have a better point of view.
