Cambridge – A jewel within England – Part II (Please read the English version at the end of the text)

No post de hoje, vamos conhecer algumas atrações que fazem de Cambridge, esta verdadeira joia no interior da Inglaterra:

 

–   Igreja Redonda (Round Church)

Oficialmente chamada de Igreja do Santo Sepulcro (Holy Sepulchre), a Round Church foi construída no século XII, por volta de 1130, pela Fraternidade do Santo Sepulcro, sendo uma das edificações mais antigas de Cambridge.

Seu formato é baseado na igreja original do Santo Sepulcro, de Jerusalém.

Pouco se sabe sobre a Fraternidade que a edificou, entretanto o nome sugere conexões com as Cruzadas à Terra Santa e com os Templários.

Não deixe de visita-la por dentro, pois vale a pena!!

– A Casa do Senado (Senate House)

A partir da Round Church, ande 5 minutos até o elegante edifício em estilo neoclássico, construído entre 1722 e 1730, como sede do Conselho do Senado.

Atualmente, a Senate House pertence à Universidade de Cambridge, voltada exclusivamente a cerimonias de graduação daquelas escolas.

– Relógio Corpus

Continue andando mais 3 minutos pela King’s Parade, até a esquina com a Benet’s Street e dê uma parada na proximidade.

Neste local, encontra-se a Taylor Library, biblioteca do Corpus Christi College, onde, em 2008, foi instalado o belíssimo Corpus Clock.

Trata-se de um escultural relógio de 1,5 metro de diâmetro, com mostrador em aço inox banhado a ouro 24 quilates e um enorme gafanhoto que se movimenta com esta incrível “máquina do tempo”.

Observe os detalhes da escultura e também as luzes azuis (leds) que indicam o horário no mostrador.

Você certamente irá encontra-lo, pois muitos curiosos ficam ali parados, atraídos pelo incrível Corpus Clock, procurando entender se o gafanhoto movimenta o relógio ou se é o relógio que o movimenta………

 

 

       – Uma xícara de chá e uma grande ideia

Em 2015, no festival de Shanghai, sua empresa apresentou a “A Grande Muralha da Satchel” com uma infinidade de peças expostas.

O Príncipe William, Duque de Cambridge, aproveitou sua estada no festival para dar uma olhada na coleção e conferir pessoalmente o sucesso mundial do produto.

O endereço original da “The Cambridge Satchel Company” na cidade, é: 2, St Mary’s Passage, que fica a 1 minuto do Senate House acima comentado.

 

– Ponte Matemática (Mathematical Bridge)

Se você estiver no Corpus Clock, siga andando 4 minutos no sentido Sul, pela Trumpigton Street (sequência da King’s Parade). Vire à direita na Silver Street, ande por mais 4 minutos e pare sobre a ponte do rio Cam.

Do lado Sul da ponte, você encontrará os barcos que fazem o passeio pelos “Backs”, conforme comentamos no post anterior, enquanto que do lado Norte, terá a visão da Ponte Matemática (Mathematical Bridge) que liga os dois lados do Queen’s College.

É uma vista de tirar o fôlego!!!!

A ponte de madeira é um conjunto de linhas tangentes formando um arco, daí seu nome “Matemática”.

A estrutura original foi erguida em 1749, mas foi reconstruída em 1866 e, novamente, em 1905.

Cambridge – A jewel within England – Part II

In the present post, let’s meet some attractions that make Cambridge a true jewel within England:

• The Round Church

Officially called the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Round Church was built in the 12th century, around 1130, by initiative of the Fraternity of the Holy Sepulchre, being one of the oldest buildings in Cambridge.

Its format was based on the original church of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem.

Little is known about this Fraternity that built it, however the name indicates connections with the Crusades to the Holy Land, as well as the Templars.

Be sure to visit it on the inside, because it’s worth indeed!

• The Senate House

From the Round Church, walk 5 minutes to find the impressive neoclassical-style building, erected between 1722 and 1730, as the seat of the Senate’s Council.

Currently, the Senate House belongs to the University of Cambridge, being exclusively targeted to the Colleges’ graduation ceremonies.

• Corpus Clock

Keep walking 3 more minutes by the beautiful King’s Parade, until you find the corner of Benet’s Street and stop by the vicinity.

Since 2008, at the Taylor Library of Corpus Christi College, it is installed the amazing Corpus Clock.

A sculptural clock of 1.5 meter diameter as follows:

a stainless steel dial plated with a 24 karat gold, towered by a huge grasshopper that moves with this incredible “time machine”.

Note the sculpture’s details and also the blue lights (leds) displaying the precise time.

You will surely find it as many onlookers stand there attracted by awesome Corpus Clock, trying to understand if the grasshopper moves the clock or the watch moves the bug………

 

• A cup of tea and a great idea

The colorful leather bags that, in only 8 years, conquered the world:

In 2008, Julie, a resident of Cambridge, needed to find a way to pay her 2 children’s school fees.

How about starting a business right from the kitchen table with an initial capital of ₤600.00?

From that day Julie created a model of leather handbag that became a worldwide success, having conquered including China with her colorful collection.

In 2015, during the festival of Shanghai, Julie’s collection was called “The Great Wall of Satchel” due to the great number of showcased handbags.

Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, was in the festival and took the opportunity to visit it, confirming the product’s worldwide success.

The Cambridge Satchel Company’s original address in town, is: 2, St Marys Passage, which is just 1-minute walk from the Senate House above commented.

 

• Mathematical Bridge

From the Corpus Clock, keep walking 4 minutes southward, by the Trumpigton Street (straight from the King’s Parade). Turn right on Silver Street then walk for 4 more minutes and stop on the bridge over the River Cam.

On the South side of the bridge, you’ll find the “Chauffeur Punt” boats, as we mentioned in the previous post, whereas on the North side, you will view the Mathematical Bridge, bridging both sides of Queen’s College.

It’s a breathtaking view!!

The wooden bridge is a set of tangent lines forming an arc, hence its name “Mathematical”.

The original structure was erected in 1749, but rebuilt in 1866 and again in 1905.
