Grande parte das pessoas que visitam Portugal inclui a cidade de Fátima no roteiro, independente da formação religiosa.
Fátima fica 150 km ao noroeste de Lisboa, numa viagem de pouco mais de 1 hora e 30 minutos.

Certamente, a origem do povoado é bastante remota, entretanto é possível afirmar que o primeiro desenvolvimento se deu durante o domínio muçulmano na Península Ibérica.
Segundo a história, no século XIII, época da reconquista cristã, um cavaleiro se apaixonou por uma jovem moura chamada Fátima, que, convertida ao cristianismo, adotou o nome de Oureana.
Não por acaso a vila foi nomeada “freguesia de Fátima”, subdivisão do Concelho de Ourém.
No início do século XX, um raro acontecimento originou a peregrinação a Fátima, tornando-a um dos maiores centros mundiais de culto à Virgem Maria celebrados pela Igreja Católica.
Segundo a tradição, três crianças pastorinhas cuidavam de um rebanho na localidade de Cova da Iria, quando, por volta do meio-dia, lhes apareceu Nossa Senhora, precisamente no dia 13 de maio de 1917.

Lúcia de Jesus dos Santos (10 anos, ao centro) e seus primos menores, Francisco Marto (9 anos) e Jacinta Marto (7 anos), viviam ali perto, na aldeia de Aljustrel, quando presenciaram a aparição e receberam da Santa a missão de rezar pela paz do mundo e de retornar à Cova da Iria no mesmo horário, nos dias 13 dos 5 meses seguintes: junho, julho, agosto, setembro e outubro.
O local exato destas aparições foi sobre uma pequena árvore chamada azinheira, uma variedade do carvalho nativa na região.
Conforme foi previsto, aparições mensais continuaram a acontecer até a sexta vez, em 13 de outubro de 1917, quando calcula-se que 70.000 pessoas tenham presenciado o milagre.
Neste período repleto de fé e de mistério, um fato acabou alterando o dia e local da quarta aparição de Nossa Senhora.

Querendo descobrir o segredo dos pastorinhos, e de forma a evitar a presença deles na Cova da Iria, um administrador local levou as três crianças para sua casa, mantendo-as ali entre os dias 13 e 15 de Agosto, sem que nada ocorresse.
A localidade chamava-se Valinhos, ficava bem perto da casa de Lúcia, na aldeia de Aljustrel, e a 3 km da Cava da Iria.
No dia 19 daquele mês, Lúcia, Francisco e Jacinta novamente cuidavam do rebanho, quando presenciaram a quarta aparição sobre outra azinheira, justamente em Valinhos, onde hoje encontra-se um monumento construído por católicos húngaros em Agosto de 1956.

Portanto, ali tornou-se outro ponto de peregrinação religiosa.
Nossa Senhora pediu aos meninos videntes que fosse erguida uma capela em Sua honra, o que foi realizado sobre a primeira azinheira, onde se encontra a Capelinha das Aparições desde 1919.
A imagem de Nossa Senhora de Fátima está exatamente no ponto onde ficava a árvore das 5 aparições.
Hoje, a Capelinha encontra-se abrigada em área coberta, ao lado esquerdo do Santuário, preparada para receber os fiéis.
Do lado oposto, uma moderna construção foi erguida para comportar grande número de fiéis em temporadas de celebrações religiosas.
Na antiga Cova de Iria, próximo da Capelinha, foi erguido o Santuário de Fátima, até então um lugar desconhecido, no Concelho de Ourém.
No belo templo são celebradas missas em diversos horários do dia.
Em 1982 o Santuário ganhou fama mundial, quando o Papa João Paulo II lá esteva para agradecer sua própria sobrevivência após o ataque sofrido durante a aparição semanal na Praça de São Pedro, Vaticano.
Detalhe: o atentado contra o Papa havia ocorrido no dia 13 de maio de 1981, exatamente no aniversário da primeira aparição de Nossa Senhora de Fátima.
Prevendo que Francisco e Jacinta não viveriam muito além de dois anos a partir dos encontros, durante as aparições, Nossa Senhora revelou a Lúcia de Jesus dos Santos os famosos “três segredos”, considerados proféticos na história do século XX.
Dois deles foram revelados por Lúcia em documento de 1941 e o último em 1944, porém só divulgado no ano 2000.
Desde jovem Lúcia tornou-se freira da Ordem das Carmelitas Descalças, viveu até 2005 e seu processo de beatificação foi iniciado pelo Vaticano em 2008.
Em 13 de maio de 2000, os dois irmãos videntes, Francisco e Jacinta, foram beatificados por João Paulo II.
Comemorando 100 anos da primeira Aparição de Nossa Senhora, em 13 de maio de 2017 o Papa Francisco I esteve em Fátima a fim de canonizar os irmãos Francisco e Jacinta Marto, depois de constatado um milagre a eles atribuído.

Most people who visit Portugal include Fatima in the script, regardless their religious orientation.
Fatima lies 150 km northeast of Lisbon, on a 90 minute-trip or so.
Certainly, the origin of the town is quite remote, however it’s possible to state that the first development occurred during the Muslim domain in the Iberian Peninsula.
As the story goes, in the 13th century, time of the Christian Reconquest, a rider fell in love with a young mourish woman named Fatima, who converted herself to Christianity, then adopted the name Oureana.
Not by chance the village was named “parish of Fatima”, subdivision of the municipality of Ourem.
In the early 20th century a rare event originated the pilgrimage to Fatima, making it one of the largest world centers of worship to Virgin Mary celebrated by the Catholic Church.
According to tradition, around noon three child Shepherds tended a flock near Cova da Iria (Fatima), when Our Lady appeared to them precisely on May 13th, 1917.
Lucia de Jesus dos Santos (10 years old, at the center) and their smaller cousins, Francisco Marto (9 years old) and Jacinta Marto (7 years old), lived nearby in the village of Aljustrel, when they witnessed the Apparition, receiving the Holy mission to pray for world peace and return to Cova da Iria on the same day and time in the coming 5 months: June , July, August, September and October.
The exact location of those Apparitions was on a small tree called holmoak, a variety of native oak in the region.
As predicted, the monthly Apparition continued happening until the sixth time, on October 13th, 1917, when 70,000 people were able to witness the impressive miracle.
During this period full of faith and mystery, a fact came to change the day and place of the fourth Our Lady’s Apparition.
Trying to discover the Shepherds’ secrets and avoiding their presence in Cova da Iria, a local administrator took the three children to his home, keeping them there from August 13th to 15th, however nothing happened.
Valinhos is the name of the place which was near Lucia’s home in the village of Aljustrel, just 3 km from Cava da Iria.
On August 19th Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta once more took care of their flock when they witnessed the fourth Apparition on another holmoak, precisely in Valinhos where now lies a monument built by Hungarian Catholics in August 1956.
As it stands, this second place became other point of religious pilgrimage.
Our Lady asked the children that a chapel should be erected in Her honor, which was carried out on the first holmoak in 1919; Capelinha das Aparições (Chapel of the Apparitions).
The Our Lady of Fatima’s statue is precisely at the spot of 5 Apparitions, where there was a holmoak tree by then.
Today the Chapel is housed in a covered area, to the left side of the sanctuary, ready to receive the faithful.
On the opposite side, a modern building was built in order to accommodate large number of devotees in seasons of religious celebrations.
Near the Chapel, at the ancient Cova de Iria, the Shrine of Fatima has been built, a place previously unknown in the municipality of Ourem.
In the beautiful temple several masses take place during the day.
In 1982 the Shrine gained worldwide fame, when Pope John Paul II went there to thank His own survival after the attack suffered during his weekly appearance in St. Peter’s square, Vatican.
Remark: the attack on the Pope had been on May 13th, 1981, exactly on the anniversary of our Lady of Fatima’s first Apparition.
Predicting that Francisco and Jacinta wouldn’t live more than two years from those days, during the Apparitions our Lady revealed to Lucia de Jesus dos Santos “three secrets” considered prophetic in the 20th century’s history.
Two of them were revealed by Lucia in 1941 through a document, whereas the last one was written in 1944, but only released in the year 2000.
Since young Lucia became a nun of the Discalced Carmelites Order. She lived until 2005, so her beatification process was started by the Vatican in 2008.
On May 13th, 2000, the brothers Francisco and Jacinta were beatified by the Pope John Paul II.
Celebrating 100 years of our Lady’s first Apparition, in May 13th, 2017, Pope Francis I has been to Fatima in order to canonize the brothers Francisco and Jacinta Marto, once a miracle attributed to them had been confirmed.
