Na transição dos séculos XV e XVI, época dos grandes descobrimentos, os reinos de Portugal e de Espanha financiaram a busca por mares desconhecidos, à procura de especiarias, ouro, prata e outras riquezas que encontrassem.
Fernão de Magalhães, um navegador português a serviço do Reino Espanhol, organizou a primeira viagem de circum-navegação, descobrindo, em 1520, ao sul do Novo Mundo, um canal natural de aproximadamente 600 km que ligava os oceanos Atlântico e Pacífico.
Inicialmente foi nomeado Estreito de Todos os Santos e depois de sua morte passou a chamar-se Estreito de Magalhães.
Nos anos de 1843 e de 1881, Chile e Argentina tomaram posse do canal, que divide o Sul do Continente Americano e a Terra do Fogo.
A cidade chilena mais importante da região, Punta Arenas, é banhada justamente pelas águas do Estreito de Magalhães.
A distância entre Santiago e Punta Arenas é de 3023 km, percorrida com mais segurança entre Outubro e Março.
Não é necessário viajar 32 horas de carro a partir da capital, pois Punta Arenas é atendida por um ótimo aeroporto que opera com voos regulares incluindo linhas internacionais.
Além de um importante ponto turístico, a cidade é “porto livre”, oferecendo produtos mais baratos do que em outras partes do Chile, tais como roupas, eletrônicos, bebidas, relógios, etc.
De Punta Arenas partem cruzeiros em pequenos/medios navios, de onde se avista a paisagem de uma das mais belas e intocadas regiões do mundo, a Patagônia e Terra do Fogo.

– Seno Otway – Um lugar mágico
A 70 km de Punta Arenas fica um santuário que você não pode deixar de conhecer: a Colônia Natural de Pinguins da espécie Magallanes.

Anualmente, entre Setembro e Março, esta reserva é o local escolhido pelos pinguins Magallanes para se reproduzirem.
Passarelas elevadas e cabines permitem que os visitantes caminhem e observem os animais sem qualquer interferência no ambiente natural.
Um fato impressionante, é que o casal se mantém eternamente fiel e que retorna ao mesmo local todos os anos ao longo da vida.
As fotos do post de hoje foram tiradas em Setembro, logo que os pinguins começam a chegar à colônia de reprodução:
– O fascinante ambiente de Seno Otway
– O desembarque na praia
– A caminhada até o lago
– O refrescante mergulho em água doce
– A procura do par através do som, por ser impossível fazê-lo de forma visual
– O emocionante reencontro, depois de meses separados. Um momento mágico!!!
A precisão é matemática….
Ainda em Setembro, haverá um período de jejum alimentar do casal, que previamente reservou energia suficiente para o início do ciclo.
Durante Outubro, os pinguins reconhecerão o ninho anteriormente usado, acontecerá o acasalamento e a fêmea voltará a depositar seus ovos no mesmo lugar de sempre.
Segue-se o período de encubação até o final de Novembro, quando os ovos eclodem.
O desenvolvimento completo dos filhotes se dará até Março, quando toda a família abandonará a colônia, retornando ali somente em Setembro, na próxima temporada de reprodução.

Uma verdadeira lição da Mãe Natureza !!!! Um exemplo de vida para se guardar…
Não dá vontade de deixar a Colônia ao final da visita.
Caso você não tenha locado um veículo, procure, em Punta Arenas, por agências de turismo que ofereçam passeios em Seno Otway, lembrando que de acordo com o mês (Setembro a Março) você terá uma situação diferente a observar.
A região é descampada e venta bastante, portanto leve um reforçado casaco de nylon para se proteger e abrigar seu equipamento fotográfico quando não o estiver usando.

The transition between the 15th and 16th centuries, a time of great discoveries, the kingdoms of Portugal and Spain sponsored travels through unknown seas in search of spices, gold, silver and whatever riches they could find.
Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese navigator in the service of the Spanish Kingdom, organized the first voyage of circumnavigation discovering in 1520 a natural channel (approximately 600 km) linking the Atlantic and Pacific oceans at the South of the New World (Americas).
It was initially named Strait of All Saints, then after his death was renamed Strait of Magellan.
In the years 1843 and 1881, Chile and Argentina took possession of the canal, which divides the South American continent and Tierra del Fuego.
The region’s most important Chilean city is Punta Arenas that is bathed by the Strait of Magellan.
The distance between Santiago and Punta Arenas is 3023 km that should be more safely travelled between October and March.
Never mind, for you won’t need to travel 32-hour drive from the capital hence Punta Arenas has a great airport operating regular flights including international routes.
Besides being an important tourist spot, the city is a “free port”, offering cheaper products than in other parts of Chile such as clothing, electronics, beverages, watches, etc.
From Punta Arenas you can depart on Cruise ships to explore the landscape of one of the most beautiful and untouched parts of the world, the Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego.

-Seno Otway – A magic place
Just 70 km from Punta Arenas is a sanctuary that you cannot miss at all: the Natural Magallanes Penguins’ Colony.
Each year, between September and March, this reserve will chosen by Magallanes penguins to accomplish their reproductive cycle.
Elevated catwalks and cabins allow visitors to walk and observe the animals without any interference to the natural environment.
It’s impressive that the male and female will remain eternally faithful and every year they arrive separately to the same place as before.
The photos were taken in September, when the penguins begin arriving at the colony.

Something mathematical ….
Still in September they will accomplish a period of fasting, once male and female have previously reserved enough energy for the beginning of the cycle.
During October, male and female will recognize their previous nest, they will mate and then female will deposit the eggs.
A brooding period will come until the end of November, when the eggs finally hatch.
The complete development of the puppies will reach March, when the whole family abandons the colony, only returning there in the next reproductive season (next September).

At the end of the visit you’ll feel like staying around a little more.
In case you do not have leased a vehicle, look for a travel agency in Punta Arenas that operates tours to Seno Otway, noting that according to the month (September to March) you will find a particular situation.
The region is treeless and windy, so be sure to take a reinforced nylon coat to protect yourself as well as keep your photographic equipment sheltered when not in use.
