 É difícil definir o que melhor simboliza a fascinante capital da Inglaterra:

O Big-Ben, as famosas cabines telefônicas, seus ônibus vermelhos de dois andares, os tradicionais taxis pretos, a bela Tower Bridge, a troca da guarda no Palácio de Buckingham ou o Metrô ????

 

Tanto faz. O que a grande maioria concorda, é que a cidade encanta a todos os turistas que ali chegam.

Uma vez lá, a impressão que se tem é de estar no centro do planeta, basicamente por duas razões principais:

• O meridiano de Greenwich passa por ali, dividindo o mundo entre Leste e Oeste . Dê um só passo e troque de lado na Terra. Não é genial??
• Onde quer que vá, você sempre estará rodeado de pessoas vindas dos 5 Continentes e ouvindo diferentes idiomas num mesmo lugar. Muitas delas usam suas roupas de origem, tornando o visual ainda mais interessante.

É uma sensação única!!!

A cidade tem vida intensa e alegre, principalmente em época de clima mais favorável.

Me arrisco a afirmar que Londres rejuvenesce as pessoas….Ao menos, eu, me sinto mais jovem depois de uns dias por lá. Se pudesse, voltaria duas ou mais vezes por ano…..assim, além de me divertir, não envelheceria.

A quantidade de atrativos que a cidade oferece é impressionante e então você precisará de pelo menos 5 dias para ter uma razoável experiência por lá, certamente trazendo ótimas recordações.

Mas, com tanta coisa para conhecer e aproveitar, como se locomover ???

Dirigir em Londres? Jamais !!! Esquece….Direção do lado direito requer um novo aprendizado. Algo como 2 semanas para começar a se acostumar. Não se arrisque!!

Você senta no banco do carro e logo entra em pânico: roubaram o volante!!!! Chama um policial, por favor….é urgente!!!

Estacionar???  Faça antes um seguro das rodas e dos pneus….Tudo é diferente e invertido. Portanto, cuidado ao cruzar ruas e avenidas.

Olhe sistematicamente para os dois lados da via, antes de atravessar.

Taxi, ônibus ou Metrô?

O taxi londrino é extremamente interessante, pois acomoda confortavelmente pessoas e bagagem sem necessidade de abrir o porta-malas (nem sei se tem). Há um espaço generoso entre o banco de passageiros e do motorista. Se estiver em mais de 2 passageiros, não se abale: abaixe  os bancos retráteis em frente aos seus e vá conversando numa boa.

Genial !!!

Não sei porque razão o taxi inglês nunca foi copiado em outros países? A ideia é brilhante…

Apesar de o preço da corrida de taxi não ser tão barata, aconselho a todos que experimentem esta maravilha pelo menos uma vez na vida. Ninguém se arrepende!

Os 7500 ônibus de dois andares (double-decker bus) são uma opção interessante pelo valor e visual que oferecem, mas há que se ter uma boa noção da cidade para não perder tempo, tomando o itinerário errado.

Dentre todos, em termos de custo, rapidez e maior chance de acerto, sem dúvida fico com o Metrô, embora perdendo o belo visual urbano.

O “Underground” ou “Tube”, como é popularmente conhecido em Londres, foi o primeiro transporte subterrâneo urbano do mundo, inaugurado em 1863, ou seja, há 152 anos atrás. Inacreditável!!!

Atualmente, o “Tube” conta com 408 km de rede, atendido por 11 linhas e 275 estações. Cobre 100% da cidade, além de toda a região metropolitana.

Estimo que não precise andar mais do que 300m para se chegar a uma estação.

A movimentação de pessoas é realmente impressionante!!

Logo que chegar à cidade, procure um mapa do Underground londrino e, nos pontos de venda do Oyster- card, adquira o cartão, carregando algo como £20,00, suficiente para 2 a 3 dias, dependendo da sua disposição de energia e tempo.

Além de ser mais barato do que os bilhetes individuais, evita enfrentar a bilheteria a cada nova locomoção.

Basta passar o cartão na catraca para acessar o interior da estação e instantaneamente saber seu saldo. Simples assim!!!

Saldo baixo?  Não se preocupe: recarregue o cartão em máquinas do próprio Metrô (ou lojas), no valor compatível com o tempo que irá permanecer na cidade.

Ganham-se tempo e dinheiro. Quer coisa melhor??

Aconselho a carregar o Oyster somente para a Zona 1 do Tube, pois dificilmente você sairá dali durante sua jornada. Caso seja necessário, pague à parte pelo bilhete mais específico.

Antes de acessar as plataformas, observe nas placas a estação de destino, de acordo com o sentido Norte ou Sul, Leste ou Oeste. No começo, é comum errar de sentido, mas logo se aprende como aquilo funciona….

Quando estiver na plataforma de embarque, observe atentamente o letreiro do trem que chega, pois a estação pode ser servida por mais de uma linha no mesmo nível.

A frase mais ouvida do sistema de audio nas plataformas ou no interior dos trens, é:

“Please mind the doors and mind the gap”

Algo como: por favor tome cuidado com as portas e com o vão entre o trem e a plataforma.

Tanto é, que vendem camisetas com a frase “Mind the Gap” estampada.

É típico de lá!!

Ao chegar à estação de destino, passe novamente o cartão no sensor para abertura da catraca.

Nas diversas escadas rolantes do Tube, mantenha-se sempre ao lado direito, deixando o esquerdo para os apressados londrinos que não se conformam com a velocidade normal de subida. Eles sobem os degraus da escada…..rolante…..

OK, agora você já conhece as opções de transporte em Londres e pode planejar sua viagem ou seu dia por lá.

London-between tradition and youthful energy

It is hard to define what better symbolizes the fascinating capital of England:

The iconic Big Ben, the famous phone booths, the red double-decker buses, the traditional black cabs, the beautiful Tower Bridge, the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace, or its Underground ????

Whatever…

What most people agree though, is:  London dazzles visitors from all over the world.

Once there, you’ll have the impression of being right at the center of the planet, basically for two main reasons:

• The Greenwich Meridian crosses London, dividing the world between East and West. Take a single step and you’ll change the side of the earth. Ain’t it amazing?
• Wherever you go, you’ll always be surrounded by people from 5 Continents, listening to different languages at once. Too many people wear their national outfits, which makes it even more interesting.

It’s a unique feeling!!!

The city has an intense and joyful environment, mainly during the favorable weather.

I venture to say that London rejuvenates people. … I say it for myself.

I feel younger after a few days in London. I certainly would go back there two or more times a year if I could, so I would never grow old…

London offers too many attractions for everyone and, as it stands, it would take at least 5 days to have a reasonable experience and great memories from there.

But, with so much to do and enjoy, how to get around it?

Driving in London? Forget it. … Direction of the right side requires a new learning. Something like 2 weeks to start getting used to it. Don’t take any chances!

You sit in the car seat, then panic: Oh my God, someone has stolen the wheel !!!!

Call a policeman, please!!! It’s urgent!!!

Parking??? Not before hiring an insurance policy covering both wheels and tyres … otherwise you will face troubles with the rental company…

Everything is different and …..inverted. So be extremely careful by crossing streets and avenues. Systematically look both sides before crossing any way.

By cab, double-decker buses or Tube?

The London taxis are extremely interesting because they comfortably accommodate passengers and luggage without opening the trunk (I don’t even know if they have one).

There is a generous space between the passengers and the driver. If you are more than 2 passengers, keep yourself easy: just lower the retractable seats in front of you and go finely talking. Genius!!!

I don’t know why the English taxi has never been copied outside the UK.  The idea is really brilliant.

Although the price of a taxi race is not that cheap, I advise everyone to experience this wonder for at least once in their lives. They will never regret it for sure.

The double-decker bus is an interesting option both for the value and visual point of view, but you should have a previous idea of the city or you’ll lose time taking a wrong route.

Among all the options, referring to cost, speed and increased chance to hit your aim, no doubt I would get the Underground, even losing the beautiful view of the city.

The Underground or Tube, as it is popularly known in London, was the first urban massive transport in the world, opened in 1863, i.e. at unbelievable 152 years ago.!!!

Currently, the Tube network has 408 km, attended by 11 lines and 275 stations, covering the whole city plus metropolitan zone.

I guess you’ll never walk more than 300m to reach a station.

The people motion is absolutly awesome!!!!

As soon as you arrive, look for a map of the London Underground, purchase and charge an Oyster card with something like £20,00, enough for 2 to 3 days, depending on the provision of energy and time you have.

Besides being cheaper than individual tickets, you’ll avoid standing in the cashier’s line each new trip.

Just run your card against the turnstile to access the interior of the station and you’ll learn your account balance instantly. Simple as that!!!

Low balance?  Never mind: recharge the card at Tube’s own machines (or stores), compatible with your remaining time in the city.

Save time and money. Want something better?

I advise you to adquire the Oyster card for Zone 1 only, once you will hardly come out of there during your journey. If necessary, pay a specific ticket for outside trips.

Before accessing the platforms, keep an eye on the signs (on the walls) in order to plan your destination in accordance with the direction you need: North or South, East or West.

At first, it is common to lose your sense, but soon after you ‘ll find out how it works ….

Being on the boarding platform, note carefully the sign of the arriving train, as the station can be served by more than one line at the same level.

The most spoken warning from the audio system at the platforms or inside the trains, is:

“Please mind the doors and mind the gap”

So please be very careful, specially about the gap between the train and platform.

I suggest all of you to buy a t-shirt with the phrase “Mind the Gap” so you’ll always remember the lovely days spent in London.

It is typical from there!

In order to leave the destination station, pass your card against the sensor to open the turnstile for you.

Once in the Tube’s escalators, be sure to stay on the right side, leaving the left one for the hasty Londoners who can’t get over with the normal rate of climb. So they use to climb the rungs of the ladder while it goes up……

OK, now you know the transportation options in London and you can plan your trip or your day there.
