No post anterior, falamos sobre fantásticas atrações de York e, agora, vamos explorar um museu bem diferente daqueles que você conhece:

• National Railway Museum

Ande 10 minutos a partir do centro da cidade e conheça o fabuloso Museu Nacional Ferroviário de York.

Prepare-se para conhecer desde a primeira composição a vapor, até o famoso Eurostar que, desde 1994, liga as metrópoles de Londres e Paris.

Uma verdadeira aula de história e de evolução tecnológica.

Vamos ver algumas máquinas que você jamais irá se esquecer:

 

1) A composição Rocket foi originalmente fabricada para ligar Manchester a Liverpool a partir de 1829, sendo a primeira linha regular entre cidades do mundo feita por ferrovia.

A réplica que aparece na foto foi produzida em 1930, para celebrar o centenário da máquina original, sendo que a mesma funciona em demonstrações ocasionais.

 

2) Fabricada na Inglaterra em 1935, a locomotiva KF 4-8-4 foi uma das 24 unidades encomendadas pelo governo Chinês para vencer as fortes rampas, curvas de pequeno raio e cruzar as frágeis pontes chinesas. Atingia velocidades de 80 km/h no plano e de 32 km/h nos trechos em aclive.

Operou por 40 anos e foi devolvida à Inglaterra em 1981, como presente da República Popular da China ao povo Britânico.

 

3) Único exemplar fora do Japão, a Shinkansen (significa nova linha) foi fabricada em 1974, sendo a primeira composição trem-bala a atingir velocidades acima de 210 km/hora (130 milhas/hora).

 

4) A locomotiva Mallard operou entre 1938 e 1963, quando foi substituída por máquinas mais modernas.

No seu tempo, esta impressionante locomotiva a vapor foi recordista mundial de velocidade.

 

5) Réplica da seção do Eurotúnel que liga a Inglaterra à França, passando pelo Canal da Mancha. É considerada a obra de Engenharia mais importante do século XX.

O Eurostar opera comercialmente desde 1994, atendendo Londres, Paris e Bruxelas.

 

6) Em elegante estilo Art Deco, a locomotiva Duchess of Hamilton, de 1938, impressiona pela linha incrivelmente aerodinâmica.

 

7) Fabricada em 1942, durante a II Guerra Mundial, a locomotiva Southern Railway utilizou materiais simples devido à escassez de recursos na época.

 

A visita típica leva de 3 a 4 horas que você não sentirá passar de tão interessante que são estas máquinas maravilhosas.

Não se preocupe, pois dentro do Museu há um restaurante onde é possível almoçar, ou tomar um bom lanche, enquanto você relaxa naquele incrível ambiente.

Durante o dia, acontecem demonstrações periódicas do funcionamento de uma rotunda, manobrando esta enorme locomotiva:

, além disso, visite internamente antigos e luxuosos vagões de passageiros.

Um detalhe importante: fotos são permitidas, portanto não deixe de levar seu equipamento devidamente preparado com bateria carregada e cartão de memória livre.

York-England-the legacy of three civilizations

In the previous post, we talked about the York’s fantastic attractions, so let’s explore a museum quite different from others you ever knew:

• National Railway Museum

Walking just 10 minutes from York downtown you’ll discover the fabulous National Railway Museum.

Get ready to meet a range since the first steam train composition to the famous Eurostar that connects the cities of London and Paris since 1994.

A real history lesson as well as technological evolution.

Let’s see machines that you will never forget, indeed:

1) The composition Rocket was originally constructed to link Manchester to Liverpool from 1829, which was the first regular line between cities in the world, made by railroad.

The replica appearing in the picture was produced in 1930 to celebrate the centenary of the original unit, remarking that this one occasionally works.

2) Manufactured in England in 1935, locomotive KF-4-8-4  was one among 24 units ordered by the Chinese Government to face the strong ramps, small radius curves and to cross the fragile bridges.

It used to reach speeds of 80 km/h in plan and 32 km/h on incline sections.

KF-4-8-4 operated in the country for 40 years, being  returned to England in 1981 as a gift from the People’s Republic of China to the British people.

3) The only unit out of Japan, the Shinkansen (meaning new line) here displayed was manufactured in the year 1974 as the first bullet train composition to achieve speeds above 210 km/hour (130 miles/hour).

4) The locomotive Mallard operated between 1938 and 1963, when it was replaced by more modern machines.

In its time, this impressive steam locomotive was the world record holder.

5) This replica represents the channel tunnel section that connects England to France, passing through the English channel. This is considered the most important Engineering work of the 20th century.

Eurostar operates commercially since 1994, serving London, Paris and later Brussels.

6) In elegant Art Deco style, the locomotive Duchess of Hamilton from 1938, impresses by its amazingly aerodynamics profile.

7) Constructed in 1942, during World War II, the locomotive Southern Railway employed simple materials due to the scarcity of resources at the time.

 

The typical visit takes from 3 to 4 hours that you won’t feel spending so interesting these wonderful machines are.

Don’t worry, once inside the Museum there is a restaurant where you can have lunch or take a nice snack while you relax in that amazing environment.

During the visit, periodic demonstrations take place operating a roundabout maneuvering a huge locomotive.

In addition, you can visit internally luxurious passenger cars.

 

An important detail for you : pictures are full allowed, so be sure to take your equipment properly prepared with both battery and free memory card.
